Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opener Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from captain Stokes about the dressing room not being "weak men".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple conversations in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes versus the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

However, after the opener made 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The team afterwards took a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to this match, Stokes said his players had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the messaging from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this game."

The Hosts Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on the final day to secure an insurmountable three-nil lead after three matches played.

Defeat will extend the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of play – with England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's innings in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term place in the side, Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 in the team's second knock on day four, extending his poor record against the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

However, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "the media" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There's no discussion like that on Ollie in the camp," Crawley finished.
