Australia's captain Poised for a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The Australian skipper has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

Australia's chief selector the selector has declared that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series kicking off on 21 November in Western Australia.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the prospects of taking part.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and various factors at play, aside from the back issue, but additional elements," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he will feature a major part. With luck from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of back injuries, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from several home seasons in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the opening match as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs regardless. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for another day, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
