2K Brings Onboard Popular Battle Royale Producer to Boost Challenged Action Game Project Ethos

The renowned publisher has appointed a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to direct the development team at 31st Union, which is currently developing the anticipated third-person action-packed title known as this innovative game.

Leadership Change Comes After Mixed Response

The new appointee assumes the leadership position at the development studio following the dismissal of former leader Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' lackluster unveiling last autumn.

On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer informed staff about this strategic move through an official communication, which emphasized that early feedback sessions had shown the necessity for a distinct vision.

Ismailer noted that the team is now overhauling Project Ethos with a refreshed focus, aiming to address community desires.

Trend of Strategic Hires

The news echoes a comparable step taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they brought on Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to work on the BioShock development group.

Here is the full message from Ismailer's announcement:

Hello Everyone—

I know you all just wrapped up your meeting - I trust you’re as excited as I am with the good news. Previously I sent you all a message, I mentioned the following: “I believe in this crew. You all are some of the most driven and innovative developers we have had the opportunity to work with - and we’re looking forward for that relationship to persist.”

With your dedication and adaptability, particularly over the last year, you repeatedly show that.

The community feedback from last autumn’s Project ETHOS demo was informative. It validated the appeal of a action-packed game but made clear we still had refinements needed. It revealed the need for a more distinct vision.

It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve progressed. You embraced the feedback to mind and reimagined Project ETHOS with a renewed vision - one that’s poised to deliver on its potential to our players.

Our confidence in this project increases every day. To boost the outstanding progress you’ve made, I’m excited to introduce the new hire as the new Studio Head of the team. After some time of talks, he officially joins us on Monday, October 20.

His guidance and background in the competitive gaming space is considerable, having spent the past decade and a half producing and leading some of the most recognizable titles in the industry, such as Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, the battle royale hit.

I invite you all in receiving Ben soon. We are all excited to persist seeing the development of the game in the weeks to follow.

David

Background of the New Leader

Brinkman presently holds the role of executive producer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. He previously worked at Treyarch and Activision in various development positions on the iconic franchise games, and, before that, had periods at other industry leaders.

Game Information and Vision

The upcoming game was revealed in October 2024 together with a community playtest. Initially, 31st Union presented the title as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an innovative step forward on the category."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in real-time to fit your unique tactics," the description reads. "Challenge the rivals with fresh skills, challenges, and challenges that change every match. Do you safely extract with your collected items? Alternatively aim high, risk it all, and pray your team can secure victory? The choice is up to you."

Project Ethos does not have an official release date or supported systems, but enthusiasts can expect additional details as creation continues.
